Unilever's old Axe cap mould tools were coming to their end of life, therefore, they needed a low cost refresh. Unilever approached DCA, as we designed the previous cap.
This was one of the first projects I worked on at DCA. The technical ability of the people around me felt quite intimidating initially. I certainly knew I had a lot to learn.
The main design challenge here, was working out how different to make it. The requirements meant that it would never quite match up to the previous actuator. This was due to 'sticky' mono material bearing surfaces and opting for a living hinge button rather than a separate component. In the end, we opted to keep the feeling similar by having a pop-up button which popped up at the rear instead of the front. This small difference marked it as a new design rather than a cheaper replacement to the old one.
