Bentley AI
Brief
Design and fabricate an embodiment of Artificial Intelligence which a user can understand and interact with.
Role
Lead/Senior engineer

2015 till now
As Bentley's design partner, we are regularly running projects with them. My main contribution to Bentley was providing them with a new tool to develop their user experience. I showed them what was possible and how to do it. To this day, they continue to build upon that work with a dedicated team of designers and engineers.
In terms of specific projects, there is not much I can talk about currently, except for Bentley AI.
The idea behind this was to think about how humans might interact with artificial intelligence (AI) in future vehicles. The embodiment, which the rig represents, is comfort e.g. temperature and seating position. We were trying to determine what level of communication the AI should be making to the user during its processing and action phases. For example, if the AI detects the driver sweating and subsequently lowers the temperature, do we need to inform the driver about this and provide an opportunity for them to override.
To answer these questions, we designed the rig to communicate through light and movement. In the centre, was a button which provided the override functionality. This could be seen as a form of training, in order to better guide the AI in the future.
