Honeywell Self-Test Fire Alarm
Brief
Develop a way to make a smoke alarm test itself
Role
Engineer
Date
2020
You've most likely seen that guy with a long, red pole coming into your office once a year to test your smoke alarms. You've probably been distracted by it, but accepted it as part of normality. Therefore, it may seem that a self testing smoke alarm is not necessary. However, many smoke alarms go untested as they are in difficult to reach locations, posing risks to safety.
With Selt-Test, you can guarantee 100% testing compliance and this is the reason why Honeywell are having no trouble selling these systems. This is causing a massive disturbance in the fire safety industry.
The project involved more than just design work. We had to work out and trial various ways of producing smoke. If anything, it was research and development with some product design thrown on the side.
The launch of the product has been a great success and the uptake of this system is on the rise. We were fortunate enough to win an Edison award for this work.
